music video for ‘Fast on 3’ by Remont Pomp

Remont Pomp is a Gdańsk-based percussion ensemble made up of musicians with intellectual disabilities and volunteers. Since 2003, the group has operated under the auspices of PSONI, the Polish Association for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities, which has one of its centres on the Tysiąclecia Estate. Its achievements include four albums recorded with Mikołaj Trzaska, appearances at the Unsound and Counterflows festivals and a concert tour of Australia.

Remont Pomp’s pieces are always created in the same way: each member of the group plays a single short phrase, and the composition emerges when the sounds recorded in this way are brought together. Housing estates built from prefabricated blocks operate on a similar principle, with the same elements repeated over and over again: the same concrete panel, the same window, the same stairwell – dozens, even hundreds of times. Dominik Jałowiński explores this parallel in his music video, deliberately employing artificial intelligence, a technology he has been investigating for more than seven years.

The artist on his work:

The rhythm of the track is shaped by the repetition of shots, just as the rhythm of the architecture is shaped by the repetition of elements across the façades of the blocks.

The name Remont Pomp (‘Pump Repair’) points to the most important pump in our lives: the heart. Its rhythm is the first one we ever know: repetitive, yet never exactly the same. Unlike the heart, the rhythm of concrete remains monolithic, and this subtle variation – a beat, a delay, an acceleration on three – forms the core of the film.
