In 1926, Nasz Przegląd (Our Review), the largest Jewish newspaper in Poland at the time, gained a supplement called Mały Przegląd (Little Review). In the introduction, its editor-in-chief, Janusz Korczak, wrote: “There are many adults who write just because they are not shy; there are children who have many interesting ideas, comments and insights but do not write because they lack the courage or will. Our newspaper will encourage young people to write. Encourage and embolden them.” A few years ago, Jaśmina Wójcik revisited Korczak’s idea and created a cyclical project titled CHILDREN’S NEWSPAPER.

For the Gdańsk edition, the artist and kids from the School and Kindergarten Complex no. 11 in Gdańsk created an issue dedicated to district life. Young reporters, journalists and illustrators are our guides to Przeróbka, introducing us to the district through interviews, descriptions and drawings.

How did the CHILDREN’S NEWSPAPER come about? The local Editorial Board and Editor-in-Chief were appointed in mid-September. Journalists, equipped with professional press passes, gathered at editorial meetings and worked on the materials together. Finished texts and illustrations were transferred to the newspaper mockup. The festival audience will be able to read original – scanned and typeset – texts prepared by the Young Editorial Board.

Jaśmina Wójcik is a visual artist, director, and author of participatory socio-artistic actions. She uses art to work for communities that lack visibility and expression. Her most famous endeavour is a multiannual project involving former employees of the Ursus factory, crowned with the full-length creative documentary Symphony of the Ursus Factory (2018). For the last several years, Wójcik has also been involved in empathetic education: by inviting children to a creative dialogue, she empowers them and gives them a sense of agency. She is currently working on a creative documentary based on Janusz Korczak’s novel King Matt the First.
