“An Island That Does Not Exist” | sound installation

venue: 1 Ołowianka Str., along Na Stępce Canal

“An Island That Does Not Exist”  is an attempt to recall what Ołowianka looked like almost five decades ago. It’s about games in backyards, walking along the canal, a whole world of children’s perceptions gathered on this island right in the middle of Gdansk. This is the story of two sisters, their childhood on Ołowianka and place that now looks different than before.
I remember a barrel of water, onętki flowers, the glass game and chasing.
I remember jumping into Motlawa to fish drowned men out of the canal.
I remember the sound of power plant, smoke coming out of the chimney and the stench of the slaughterhouse.
I remember the morning screenings in Piast cinema and the smell of fresh milk.
I remember the huge turbines and playing on the granaries rubble.
I remember our island, a completely different island than the one it is now.

The project will consist of an audio recording – an interview with two women who talk about significant places, remembered since they were growing up. The conversation will attempt to reproduce the emotional map of this part of the city with areas that have undergone a significant transformation, and that played an important part in young girls lives. The recorded statements will be complemented by subtle sounds and recordings.
