NARRACJE 2011 Work: Amber Drops

Amber is a fossilized tree resin which has been used as an ingredient of perfumes, a healing agent and as jewellery. The Baltic region contains the world’s largest amber deposits dating from 35 to 40 million years ago when the area was covered with pine forests. At least for 2000 years Gdansk has been part of the amber trading route from the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean and until today it is one of the world's amber capitals. The International Association of Amber Masters and the National Amber Chamber of Commerce reside here and the world’s only Chair of Amber is the one of the University of Gdańsk.

The intervention by Fred Hatt and Daniel Schlaepfer refers to the important role of the natural heritage of the city and its cultural relevance. Built from artificial, amber colored resin they formed 49 drop-like objects. They included an LED which illuminate the artificial amber drops from the inside and show their inclusions which date from the present. The glow of ambers varies in time and rhythm referring to the breathing of a human being. The â€Ĺ›amber drops” are implemented in the grounds of the banks of the MotĹ‚awa and reflected by the â€Ĺ›Invisible Gate” of Front Studio Group underneath the bridge.
