Anna Smolak

An art history graduate of the Jagiellonian University, she also completed a post-graduate course in cultural diplomacy at Collegium Civitas. During 2004–2012 she held a post at the Bunkier Sztuki Gallery of Contemporary Art in Krakow. Presently, chief curator of the BWA SOKÓŁ Gallery in Nowy Sącz; she also collaborates with the Adam Mickiewicz Institute on the implementation of projects linked to the Eastern Partnership countries, in particular the Caucasus.

Her most recent projects include: Re: public, Absheron, Azerbaijan, 2015; Austeria, BWA SOKÓŁ, Nowy Sącz, 2015 (with Raluca Voinea); Detour Institution, 2015; Cadu, It’s Gonna Rain, BWA SOKÓŁ, Nowy Sącz, 2015; Katarzyna Krakowiak, Absolute Beginners, BWA SOKÓŁ, Nowy Sącz, 2015; And what if… Institution: alternative scenario (as part of Giant Step), Galeria Labirynt, Lublin, 2012 (with Magdalena Ujma and Magdalena Linkowska); Follow the White Rabbit! Exhibition for Children, 2010, 2012, Bunkier Sztuki, Krakow and Dortmunder Kunstverein, Dortmund (with Magdalena Ujma, Anna Bargiel, Sandra Dichtl).

She has participated in a number of programmes including: Residency Unlimited, New York (2014); Inverse Institutions, Flutgraben, Berlin (2012); Vesel Art Project, Bari (2011); GeoAIR Collaborative Cultural Project, GeoAir, Tbilisi (2011); Post Socialism and Media Transformations: Strategies and Representations, AICA Armenia, Yerevan (2008).

She is involved in institutional discourse, issues of locality and areas of exclusion and transgression. She lives in Krakow.
