The small green area in the Siedlce district, where Przemek Pyszczek located his installation, is filled with fading memories of past fun and recreation: paint is peeling off an old basketball hoop, a football goal post is covered with rust, and a decorative stone reminds the spectator that before the war there used to be a gazebo in the park.

With this square in mind, the artist created a metal-pipe sculpture which evokes memories of children’s playgrounds on the one hand – due to its material and colour – and on the other, is a dynamic, abstract sculpture form. According to the author’s intention, viewers are allowed to touch the work and climb it. Two see-saws, reminiscent of those that can sometimes still be found on school yards, have been installed around the sculpture. The objects, created for adults, are designed to engage the spectators in an interaction and encourage them to play: they provoke them to discover a childlike joy in themselves and refresh memories of carefree adventures in which everyone may now participate.

 

Przemek Pyszczek is a visual artist and author of paintings, sculptures and installations. He studied spatial design at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada (2007). In his artistic practice, he follows the transformations Poland has been undergoing since the fall of the iron curtain, and draws inspiration from colours, forms, specific visual features, ornaments, graphic structures and material situations, which he decomposes, condenses and layers in order to create new relations and contexts.

Blind alley

In the late 1920s, a dead-end branch was added to a road called Mały Jar (“Little Ravine”; German: Kleine Molde; after the war: Wyczółkowskiego St.). A housing estate was built around it, consisting of 22 detached houses and one multi-family house, completing the composition of the square at the end of the road. The whole estate was designed by engineer Franz Tominski. Soon after it was completed, a small green area, planted with lindens and chestnuts, was added in the fork in the road. The square’s northern, elevated part probably featured a viewing terrace with a gazebo underneath – the structure that has been preserved to this day may well represent its foundation.
