video installation: film 20’, sofa, moss

Katarzyna Górna’s latest film presents her vision of a postapocalyptic world and the people who inhabit it. After the Great Mutation, all they dream about is finding the mythical, utopian Place, where everyone’s life would be better. Statements made by humanoids in the film as well as the props and anomalies shown on screen are not always understandable to us. The sudden catastrophe that affects the destroyed planet forms the dominant background and the total vision of this artistically coherent film. Górna’s image of a picnic on the edge of civilization keeps the viewers in hypnotic tension.

The artist’s work enters into a dialogue with classic catastrophic film visions, such as Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, Twin Peaks by David Lynch or Andrei Tarkovsky’s Stalker. The title of her film – Picnic on the Edge of the Road – was inspired by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky’s science-fiction novel published in Polish 45 years ago.

Katarzyna Górna is a visual artist. Between 1989 and 1994 she studied at the Faculty of Sculpture of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in Prof. Grzegorz Kowalski’s studio. She creates large-format, mostly black-and-white photographs, which she usually combines into spatial installations. Górna is an author of video and DVD films. In 2018, she won the Maria Anto and Elsa von Freytag Art Prize.

Place with a view

The landform features of Siedlce invite the district’s inhabitants to look into the distance. Suffice it to climb one of the hills rising to the north and south of the Siedlce Brook valley to see a broad vista. From the north, these are the Winnik (German: Weinberg, or Vine Hill) and Srebrna Góra (German: Silberberg, or Silver Hill), where Ojcowska Street was marked out in the 1920s. At the end of the street, Engineer Franz Tominski designed a semi-circular viewpoint planted with linden trees. After World War II, a commercial building was erected in the central point of this layout.
